When Should Your Propeller Be Serviced?

For outboards & sterndrives:

Periodic inspection of your propeller is necessary and if small dings are detected they must be dressed or repaired, if not, this could lead to blade failure. A damaged propeller, even if it appears minor, can reduce performance and fuel economy significantly. Vibration caused by a bent or out of balance propeller can lead to drive train damage.

For inboards:

An Inboard propeller that has dings or is bent is more prone to vibration than an outboard or stern drive propeller because it does not have a rubber hub to cushion the vibration. It will also reduce performance and cause premature wearing out of the strut bearing and could lead to transmission damage. Propellers should be checked when the boat is hauled for routine maintenance or soon after any vibration is noticed.
